Vasquez Truck and Haul has been in business since the mid 1980s. For more than twenty years they've been delivering goods for most major industries in the nation, with business booming as they traversed the country, in all kinds of weather, for all kinds of clients. During the heady times from 2002 to 2007, Vasquez was a top rated accounts receivable mastermind of the trucking industry. Very few customers were behind on their bills, and those customers who were late turned in their overdue payments within an acceptable time frame. Times were great for everyone, and the cash was flowing. It was just one year later, in 2008, when the economy in the United States took a sharp decline, and both large and small businesses started to notice the squeeze on their pocketbooks: everyone had suddenly gone silent. Business slowed to a crawl

. Worse still, it was noticed by Vasquez in early 2008 that even though most of their loyal customers were on time with their payments, there were a few late bloomers who were starting to spread the disease. And as spring turmed to summer and summer into the early days of fall, Nathaniel Burton, CEO of Vasquez felt a chill go down his spine whenever he would look at the weekly A/R reports. There was a growing list of clients who now owed them back debt.He had gone to his administrators and asked them what the problem had been. Were they doing things different, or wrong, when it came to collecting overdue accounts? By his bookkeepers records, this wasn't the case. He thought perhaps that he was losing clients to a competitor who offered rock-bottom prices with little to no guarantee of quality performance, and that the folks who owed Vasquez money had jumped ship and decided to leave him holding the bag.

. Perhaps they were unable to pay their debt to him, but were able to meet the costs of a lesser service. So he did the necessary research and, after discussions with friends in the same field, he realised that no, his customers hadn't gone anywhere else. The had just gone!.The situation looked dire to Nathaniel Burton. He had employees to pay, goods to ship, trucks to maintain and overhead that was almost unbearable when compared against the lack of funds that were coming in. In the evenings he would discuss his concerns with his wife, Terri, and still find no relief from the worry and frustration.

""I have a bad feeling, Lin,"" he would say with deep woe.""Well, what do you think it is?"" she would say.Nathaniel would stare off into the distance, and then slowly close his eyes. He could see the fleet of trucks he had purchased over the years. He could see them traveling, bringing goods to all of his clients. But somewhere, a haze would form over his fleet and the vast number of vehicles would disappear to but a few. What on earth was happening to create the death of his business?""I know what it is,"" Nathaniel said. ""For way too long I've been relying solely on profits received from invoices. For too long I've been allowing our clients to let their accounts become overdue."" Terri would look at her husband lovingly, and holding his hand would say 'It's such a harsh economy these days and our clients must be having difficulty meeting their responsibilities'.""Terri was trying so hard to support her husband in these worrying times, while Nathaniel was weighed down with the worry of how he was going to handle this situation he found himself in.The next day Nathaniel strolled into his office and was determined to sit down and make every phone call to every client who had owed Vasquez money. This wasn't really a very efficient way for a Chief Executive to spend his day, and Nathaniel knew he should be overseeing all the other sides of the business, such as shipments and deliveries, approaching prospective customers, or working with his sales team. But, he felt like he was doing something proactive to help his business, even though he had staff on salary to do just that thing. Wasting money, wasting time - even with the best of intentions, Nathaniel knew that he was in trouble.

After a half day of contacting debtors in vain - they dodged his calls or promised to call back at worst or made minimal interest-only payments at best - he was about to throw in the towel when his secretary Samanthaerley knocked at his door.

""Can I have a word with you Nathaniel?"" she queried, standing in the doorway.

""Of course Samantha, please come in."" Nathaniel leaned back in his chair and looked expectantly at Samanthaerely.""Well Nathaniel, this afternoon I did some research, trying to work out how we're going to get out of this mess."" She pulled a small stack of papers from a folder and set them on the desk before him.""Have you ever heard of factoring?"" Samanthaerley asked.""It sounds vaguely familiar. What is it?"" he said. She began, ""Well, it's really very simple. So basically, factoring invoices would enable us to get paid on the nose for loads that we haul.""""Immediately?"" Nathaniel interrupted.""Yes, immediately,"" she continued, ""In a nutshell, it's pretty easy. We can have an expert account manager review our numbers and help us complete a company profile. That profile will also include investigating our accounts receivable aging reports, our existing customer credit limits and so on. In addition, factoring will assist in determining our customers' creditworthiness, independent from their credit relationship with our company. Its a broad view.I see, Nathaniel said. And then what?Well, after their review, and were approved for a factoring contract, we can negotiate terms and conditions. You'll be surprised at the amount of flexibility, all dependent upon the credit histories and business volume.

This company tells us what the cost will be to purchase factoring for our accounts receivable. Once we arrive at a mutual agreement, the funding begins.Nathaniel was still a little concerned. He leaned forward in his chair and studied the paperwork very closely.""I don't know, Samantha - it just sounds too good to be true"", Nathaniel said quietly.""Now, now, I know, I thought the same thing. But really, they have guaranteed us experts that do all the legwork, which would free us up here to focus on our clients in good standing and marketing, all that good stuff. They appear to be very flexible, Nathaniel,"" she underlined a paragraph on the paper before him.""How flexible?"" he asked.""They personalize the factoring rates so that the amount they are willing to take on is commensurate with our needs and our clients debt. It only takes 2 to 4 days for this to be figured out. """"It does all sound pretty good, remembering that we're all tapped out now with loans from the bank last year to repair vehicles, and we all know just how tight money is. We need to keep business rolling as normal and every day were going unpaid, were closer to facing some serious problems in both the short and long term,"" said Nathaniel.Nathaniel took in a long slow breath, then looked at his secretary with something like hope in his eyes.""Exactly. This could be the answer to our prayers: it will solve many problems we're facing due to these unpaid debts.""Nathaniel took a moment to think about this solution, and agreed with his secretary. The clients who owed them money were long standing friends and professional resources of Vasquez. They didn't want to throw away these relationships because they were having trouble paying their bills now. He was well aware that the economy was in a bad way and that it might be quite a while before things started picking up. That unknown amount of time, if he handled these debtors incorrectly, could spell disaster for both of them. He didn't want to lose business but he also didn't want to lose any more money.""Let me go over this tonight Samantha, and thankyou."" Samantha stood up and left Nathaniel's office, with the nice feeling of knowing that she may just have solved a very serious problem.Nathaniel sat behind his desk and looked over the details Samantha had not mentioned in their meeting. What other issues could freight factoring help Vasquez with? Running his pencil down the sheet, he noted that the freight factoring company could assist with fuel costs, fuel advances, and fuel discount cards. In fact, Vasquez could receive up to fifty-percent cash advances upon load pick-ups. As a man who hated binding contracts with no room to breathe, he was pleased to see that this factoring company would not make him sign a long term contract, would not make him pay any sign up fees and there was no minimum volume required.""Well, I'll have to tell Louis about this,"" Nathaniel muttered to himself. His son-in-law Louis had liked the idea of Vasquez so much and revered his father in law for having such business acumen that only two years before, he had gathered the venture capital to begin his own transportation service company. At that time Nathaniel knew the struggles Louis would face, but he still encouraged him to follow his dream. With the faltering economy, if a big fish like Vasquez was hurting, a little guy like Louis was about to catch his death. But, an antidote may have been found in freight factoring and Nathaniel was soon to find out.A few short months later, after completing the application process, having the legal experts review his credit history, accounts receivable, and statements, finally Nathaniel was beginning to find his way out of the hole his debtors had created for him. They adopted reasonable factoring purchase contracts and stopped wasting their own precious time trying to collect debts. They took that time and refocused effort to offering competitive prices in new territories. Nathaniel recalled those dismal months when he wasn't aware of freight factoring, and he shuddered at those memories. Had he missed the boat on this one, he probably wouldn't be in business today.

Factoring in the Future of a Trucking Business: A Story Carlos Henderson let the phone ring on his desk. His morning coffee cooled and his cigarette smoked away in the tray: Carlos is thinking, and pondering the biggest decision he's ever had to make for his trucking business. Henderson Trucking Company was at a turning point of growth and Carlos had to decide if signing with a factoring company was the right way forward.

Carloss father had started as an owner-operator and had grown Henderson Trucking Company into a fifteen trailer fleet over forty years. Yes, they had survived some very difficult times when it appeared like they might go under, and even Carlos's mother had jumped into the cab at times to make hauls. His father had worked long enough to see the price of hires drop dramatically during the recession and to see the explosion of fuel prices afterwards. But now things were different: the company was in Carlos's hands and he needed to ensure that this business would be left in great shape for his sons.

There just never seemed to be enough money to go around, and certainly no spare cash, but to move his company successfully into the future he needed a steady and reliable cash flow. His employees needed to be paid. They all have families and the usual household bills. A few of the refrigerated trailers really needed some maintenance, and in order to stay competitive he really wanted to invest in specialized haulers to meet the increasing requests for loads of agricultural and energy equipment. He knew that turning down these requests made Henderson Trucking look inefficient and weak in what was currently a strong market.

His father would have told him to wait and to take his time adding on new technology. Carlos allowed himself a good hard chuckle. His father had been against placing GPS units in the cabs. His Dad would say ""Why on earth do you need some stranger telling you to get off the exit that everyone knows has been there for years? He smiled to himself as he remembered his father poking fun at the other drivers who switched to automatic, even though automatic was quite obviously more efficient (though less manly). His father days were long gone and technology was actually an important improvement for the business such as having Qualcomm to cut down on fruitless time communicating on the phone for bills of lading.

Carlos believed a successful man is always thinking of his next step. What would be the next step for Henderson Trucking? More importantly, how could he afford it? Funding was all tied up in the mortgage for the office and garage and in the fuel bills. He just finished paying off the small bank loan for installing satellite radio in the trucks for the guys.

But was factoring the answer? There was a lot he didnt understand about the process. It sounded like a ninth grade math problem and he wondered how this would fit into the trucking business. Factoring companies buy your invoices and manage your accounts receivable for a certain percentage of the invoiced amount. In return, the factoring company pays the trucking business straight away, providing immediate cash flow for the business to pay staff, purchase fuel, and do any repairs or maintenance. Without this assistance, you're placed in the position of waiting for payment from your customers, and this can often be thirty days, or more. In those 30 days, a trucking company cant pay its bills and employees in invoices.

Now it was time for Carlos to do his homework. Carlos had heard that there were companies that charged for same day money transfers and would only advance a percentage of the money owed to your company while holding the rest in a private account if they didnt get their bill payment within 60 or so days. Plus it was worse still if the customer didnt pay up at all because then the factoring company would take it right out of the money supposed to be coming to you! Through the grapevine, hed also heard about how some companies suddenly slipped you onto a sliding scale of percentages even if you had already signed a lengthy contract for maybe 3% or 7% so there you are with 10% coming as a cost to you out of the freight bill. His friend Ronnie who had a trucking business in Missouri, was run nearly into the ground by a factoring company that charged him the full freight bill on top of the factoring fees. He knew he would have to be very careful if he was to avoid any of these shady companies?

However, it all turned out to be very simple. When he called the factoring companies he discovered they were very open about their business practices, and very friendly and helpful. Customer service appeared to understand their company and explained in clear, concise English exactly how it all worked. He didnt mind signing an exclusive contract. He liked the idea of a long term commitment so he knew he wouldnt have to bother going back and forth to different companies and wasting time filing more forms. He was not charged for a credit check, and in addition he was offered a fuel advance on the pick-up of a load. Many companies offered a non-recourse factoring program that suited him just fine. Also he was happy to hear how much he was offered in terms of percentages on the freight bills. It was good money.

It was really refreshing dealing with the factoring people. They were more personable than those loan managers at the bank. It seemed as though those bank people spoke another language, but these factoring guys knew the trucking business and spoke to him like a client, not like a beggar for a handout. The factoring companies didnt worry over his credit and the debt troubles his father had had in the past of the company. Factoring was based on the credit of his customers and on their reliability which worked well for Carlos because he and his father had built up good strong relationships over decades with their list of clients. So he knew they would understand when the factoring company contacted them for the invoices. His clients wouldnt think poorly of Henderson Trucking and the factoring companies appeared capable of handling the accounts receivable in the same polite manner that his father had used over the years.

Carlos stepped out of his office to let his secretary know to expect the arrival of the factoring contract shortly. There was a new bounce is his step now: he knew instinctively that this new step would raise the future of his company to a new and higher level, and that all the stress from the past could now be put behind him. He suddenly realized that, with this new cash flow, he could actually expand Henderson Trucking Company and who knows, move into Canada, which had always been his dream. His heart felt full knowing his sons wouldnt have to worry about money because of the right decisions he had made for their trucking business.

Trucking Factoring  Articles

So, this is not a loan? asked Julio Rose, reclining back into his chair and crossing his legs. The woman who sat across the desk smiled and shook her head. Not quite, she said.Julio Rose owned a small trucking company, and his business had recently fallen on difficult times. Certainly the trucking business can be an extremely profitable venture, and for many years it had been that way for Claude. He named his business Caldwell Trucking, named after Isaac and Nathaniel, his two grandfathers. They had both been hardworking men, and had done a lot to make Julio the same.Disaster had struck half a year ago, when two trucks in Claudes fifteen truck fleet went down. One was a roll-over and ended up in the trucking graveyard: the other was involved in a serious and costly accident. The financial security of Claude's company relied on his full fleet on fifteen being on the road, and missing two trucks was just devastating . In addition, he just didn't have the available cash to buy a new truck, plus repair the other one.Paying of bills in the trucking industry is always a major cause for concern for businesses.

Waiting a month or longer for bills to be paid was quite normal. This system works okay as long as no problems arise, but if they do, then things can get quite sticky.Julio was an excellent business man, and he certainly hadn't done anything wrong. Things had happened that he couldn't have predicted, and he had to figure out a way to keep his business from hurting, or even going under. And that's why he found himself across the desk from this woman. Julio knew she was employed by a Factoring company and that her name was Emma. Julio had come across her company as he sat in his office late one night, pouring over the internet for some solution to his problem long after his employees had gone home. She sat there now, and explained. it is really not a loan at all: we actually buy your accounts receivable. We're not giving you finance to be repaid later: we're purchasing something from you, and when you can you can buy it back. This is a win-win situation: we're protected from a total loss, and you're protected from the ridiculous fees and charges you'd have to pay if you borrowed from a bank.Julio agreed. It sounded perfect - perhaps too good?.Emma laughed. You look like you dont believe me, she said. No, I do, I just think it sounds a bit too good to be true. I thought I was going to lose my company.Emma smiled, agreeing. Yes, we get a lot of that. There's no way we want to see you lose your business. You work hard, youve put everything you can into it. We all need help sometimes. That's why we do what we do.Well, I'm very grateful that you came to see me today. Its right down the road, usually we do it all online, but I didnt mind swinging on by today, Emma said with a smile. Lets see what we can do to help you.And with that they set about making a profile.

Julio filled the form out, with Emma available to help him if he needed it. The profile filled Emma and her company in on Claudes company, and would help them determine if he was suitable for factoring. In truth, not all companies were. Some were beyond factoring special brand of help, and sometimes things werent even dire enough for it. As Julio completed his form, Emma listened to his story and she felt quite sure he would be the ideal candidate for Factoring.Emma took the completed form and placed it in her briefcase. Standing up, she reached over the desk and shook Claude's hand. He also stood up, and they smiled at each other. Julio walked Emma to the door where they said 'Goodbye', then he went back into his office. His employees were there, seven who worked in the office, and as he sat behind his desk once more he heard the familiar clack of fingers on keyboards, the electronic whine of the copy machine. He leaned back and closed his eyes. He had felt so helpless lately, was sure the whole thing was collapsing, and would take him with it. Talking to Emma though, learning about factoring, it felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He relaxed into his chair, running his hand through his thick black hair with its telling streaks of grey. All those long, sleepless nights. The sudden panic attacks, not matter where he was. Already he could feel all the stress start to drain away. He knew it wasn't over yet and that there was still a way to go, but he could just feel everything start to change for him. He was still here; he knew this was the right path for him, and he felt proud that he had taken the appropriate steps to sort out his problems.Julio couldnt help but think back to when he had first started the business. He had opened a restaurant at age twenty two when he was fresh out of school. It had been successful. Home cooking in his hometown, and he had done very well. But he had gotten bored. He wasn't passionate about the food industry. He thought about it for a long time, then decided it was time to sell his restaurant. He took half a year off, and in that time he thought to start Caldwell Trucking. And that's exactly what he did. For the second time in his short life he created a company from the ground up. He had been successful. Then disaster! The two trucks went down and suddenly his success wasn't looking so guaranteed. He was nearing fifty. He was concerned that he just didn't have the energy left to try and save the business. But he couldnt give up. Just the thought of shutting down, cutting his losses, laying off his workers - the whole thing made him physically sick some nights. He didnt know how to say quit. And now, because of factoring, he was sure he wouldnt have to. Claude's eyes opened, he sat forward in his chair and turned on his computer. He had things to do. There would be plenty of time later to be thankful, but for now it was time to get back to work.

There's genuinely not a thing to be distressed about when it comes to using a Factoring company-- they aren't like a financial institution or any individual who is going to leave you with a large mound of personal debt to repay. You give them legitimate invoices from output you have already finished , you are simply quickening the payment process.

In the United states of America, where truck companies develop, factoring establishments are not considered taking on loan in any capacity. This confidential agreement then allows both parties to make money and indulge in a worry-free future-- it gives the factoring firm a guaranteed resource of cash flow to put into the list and it supplies the trucking firm the required money that they worked hard to generate.

The trucking business provides their invoices to the factoring firm. The trucking factoring firm then obtain the installment payments from the trucking company's customers. Factoring has beenaround for centuries and has been adopted for decades by lots of different business sectors-- but none exceeding so than truckers. While you may lose out on a small part of the money, something like 1-3 % depending on who you team up with, it implies that you are getting the cash today and can actually start setting the money to do work.

After all, an IOU or an invoice is not actually going to fund costs, is it? For trucking firms when the resources can be fantastic one day and gone the next, it's up to the drivers to work smartly and to ascertain they are leaving themselves with a significant measure of time and money to get through the week till they are handed over again.

So the next time your trucking company is enduring some short-term cash flow problems and you are putting in too much time chasing slow paying customers, why not start taking into consideration employing a factoring businesses as a means to get your cash and give yourself a more at ease future in the eyes of your trucking personnel and your bank difference?

Traditional Bank Loans

Finance through a bank loan is the normal, or traditional, way of financing your business. These loans can be a life-saver, but they're not always available to every business. As an example, a newly formed business may not have the required assets to qualify for a bank loan, and even if they did, it's usual practise for a bank to use the business itself as collateral. This means that if you default on your loan payment you could lose your entire business. Plus, the amount you apply for through the bank is the actual amount that you are going to receive. Once the loan is paid off, you can then apply for another loan if the need arises.

Trucking Factoring Companies

Trucking Factoring companies don't offer loans, and you don't go into debt when you get money from a Trucking Factoring company. The finance you receive from the Trucking Factoring company is determined by money already earned by your business, but not yet received. Trucking Factoring companies actually purchase your accounts receivable or at least part of them for a percentage of their total worth, Normally around 80%-95%. The amount of finance you can receive will be based on the amount you have earned and the accounts receivable you are prepared to 'sell.' Once you have set up Trucking Factoring account it continues as long as you wish it too and the amount of money available to you even can grow as your business grows, giving you the ready cash you need to meet your own obligations.

What Are The Benefits Of A Trucking Factoring Company Versus A Traditional Bank Loan?

Not every business can benefit from Trucking Factoring account financing because you have to have a business with accounts receivable, however there are many benefits for those who can access this type of finance.

1. There is no debt. Since the Trucking Factoring company actually buys your accounts receivable you don't actually incur debt like you do with a bank loan. This has many benefits including the fact, that this type of financing won't affect either your business credit rating or your personal credit rating. Should the unforeseeable happen and your business fails, you won't have to worry about anyone coming after your personal as well as your business assets to pay off a loan. The debt goes onto your credit report with a bank loan, with only one missed payment adversely affecting your business credit: it would also affect your ability to secure insurance, and may reflect on your personal credit rating as well.

2. There's no collateral required. Another great benefit of using the services of a Trucking Factoring company instead of a bank loan is that there is no collateral required for the Trucking Factoring company, because the Trucking Factoring company is 'buying' your accounts receivables. Plus, the state of your credit rating is not an issue; however the Trucking Factoring company will run a credit check on your clients whose accounts receivable are being offered for financing. This makes it easier for fledgling businesses to get the financing they need through a Trucking Factoring company (as long as their accounts receivables are in good order) then from a bank, who may not feel that you have been in business long enough to be worth the risk of issuing you a loan.

3. You'll receive the money faster. Using a Trucking Factoring company means that you'll get the finance quicker. The money will normally be in your account within 24 hours, once the Trucking Factoring company is confident that your customers accounts are likely to be paid. With a bank, there are vast amounts of paperwork, then the loan has to be underwritten, which can take months before you actually see the loan if it is approved.

4.Interest is Paid Up Front. With a bank loan interest continues to build, and this has to be paid the whole time you have a business loan; however with a Trucking Factoring company there is no interest - they take it right off the top by deducting it from the total amount of receivable accounts. So you don't have to worry about monthly loan repayments, and you don't have to worry about the amount of interest payable, because all the money in the account is yours to spend.

As you can see from the above, there are some great benefits to financing through a Trucking Factoring company, and not through a traditional bank loan. However, there are also a couple of other benefits that a factory company can offer your business is far beyond the scope of the bank. The most important benefits is that once you sell your accounts receivable to the factory company, you don't have to take time away from running your business to collect the money owed from reluctant to pay customers. The Trucking Factoring company takes over that chore, since it is now their money to collect. Trucking Factoring companies are very efficient at debt collecting, and this frees up your valuable time to devote to running your company.

In addition, since the Trucking Factoring company evaluates the credit quality of your customers prior to purchasing the accounts receivable you gain valuable information into which customers are likely to pay and which ones are not so likely to pay.A Trucking Factoring company is not the only method of gaining access to finance for the running and growing of your business, however it does offer a financing option well worth considering.
